Friend or Foe?

I spotted (if you’ll pardon the pun) these two ladybirds travelling along the flowers on our maincrop potatoes one evening this week.

Are these our native British species, or the invasive harlequin ladybird? I think that the patterning on the spotted ladybird strongly indicates that we have intruders in our garden. I have sent a picture to the harlequin ladybird survey for identification, and will let you know the outcome.

  1. Definitely a Harlequin – they were first spotted in the south England some years ago but have crept Northward and latest recordings show that even Scotland is not immune from these aliens. The Royal Society published some research on ways they are investigating to control them- a sexually transmitted mite. At least your potatoes are doing well.

    • Sorry for not responding sooner, have been away from technology in the Dordogne for a week!
Edith, I hope that you have a lovely break.
Charlotte, thank you for your encouragement, and thank you Laura for the information – I suspected that they were. The speed with which they’ve spread sounds quite incredible! I hope our native species survives…

  2. Dear Sara, I do not wish to be alarmist, and I may well be wrong, but I have a strong suspicion that you may be right. I shall be anxious to know when I return from my enforced break in mid July.
