Poppy Power

These poppies which self-seed with abandon across our garden make me smile. The little furry buds appear and split to reveal crumpled tissue petals of orange-red.

Then a few hours later the petals drop, eventually followed by the stamens, to leave the seed capsule, like a miniature salt shaker.

They are not the most dramatic poppy, the flowers are barely substantial with four almost translucent petals and their heads often hanging down to the ground; neither do they bloom for more than a few hours – so that if you don’t pay attention the discarded petals tumbled by the wind are often the first sign that you see – but I love the little burst of colour that they add, and their simple grace.
