Sunday dawned cold, clear and beautiful. Advertisements
Our weekend began indoors, as I worked to put the finishing touches to some handmade gifts for a friend’s baby shower on Saturday afternoon, and baked a batch of very indulgent frosted chocolate cupcakes to accompany them (black-bottomed cupcakes from the Hummingbird Bakery recipe collection, no less).
More murmurations of starlings again today, at the end of a delightful day of crisp cold sunshine. Wave upon wave of small groups of birds circled and joined the roost in the tree.
It’s been a long gloomy week here, with torrential downpours. The lanes are riddled with new craters, which lurk beneath deep pools and streams of dark water running off the fields, ready to swallow unsuspecting car tyres.
What a wonderful word murmuration is. And what a spectacular sight it is to stand below a murmuration of starlings in the last hour or so before dusk, as their band of shadows writhes its way across the sky in perfect precision.
Happy New Year to one and all! I hope that 2011 finds you all well, and brings great joy to each and every one of you.
